Landstar Receives Multiple National Safety Council Awards

Landstar was honored in many ways at the National Safety Council’s Congress and Expo in Atlanta, Georgia, at the end of September.

Landstar Vice President of Safety and Compliance Mike Cobb and Landstar Orientation Coordinator Steve Hoefer were each honored during the Safety Council’s week-long event.

Cobb received the highest honor awarded to individual safety professionals by the National Safety Council (NSC), The Distinguished Service to Safety Award, which recognizes individual professionals who are dedicated to safety.

Vice President of Safety and Compliance Mike Cobb was honored with The Distinguished Service to Safety Award at the NSC Congress and Expo.

“It was a humbling experience and definitely a once in a lifetime achievement,” said Cobb. “This was not something I asked for. None of us who do this work are in it for awards, but it was so nice to receive this honor.”

The Distinguished Service to Safety Award was first presented in 1942 to recognize individuals and companies who significantly supported U.S. workers during World War II. The award was reorganized in 1951 and then reinstated in April 1954 as the highest NSC award to individuals. Cobb was among six other professionals honored for their dedication to safety.

“This award really belongs to Landstar and all of the employees, independent Landstar owner-operators and agents who are committed to putting safety first day in and day out. I’m just the representative of a company-wide safety culture that produces outstanding results,” said Cobb.

Landstar Orientation Coordinator Steve Hoefer was also honored by the NSC during the Defensive Driving Courses (DDC) Awards banquet held at the Expo. Hoefer received the 2014 Instructor of the Year award as a Defensive Driving Course Instructor for Professional Truck Drivers.

Hoefer was nominated for the award by Landstar’s Supervisor of BCO Orientation, Steven Bailey, for the Defensive Driving courses he teaches every Monday and Wednesday to new Landstar Business Capacity Owners (BCOs) in Rockford, Illinois. Hoefer was selected for the honor from 9,000 certified defensive driving course instructors around the world.

“To be nominated was incredible, then to be selected to receive this award from such a large group of defensive driving instructors from all over is a great honor,” said Hoefer.

Landstar Transportation Logistics, Inc. was also recognized during the DDC Awards banquet, receiving the prestigious Training Center Award for Astonishing Achievement in Training for Professional Truck Drivers. The award recognizes the training and achievements of Landstar BCOs as being among the safest in the industry.

Congratulations to Mike Cobb, Steve Hoefer and all of the professionals at Landstar who support and help educate others about Landstar’s safety culture.
