For Jamie Chapman, leasing with Landstar marked a successful transition from military service to life as an independent business owner.
Chapman joined the U.S. Army in 1986 and later served in the Army National Guard’s transportation unit, hauling armored vehicles and training soldiers for deployment. By 2010, he had risen to the rank of Master Sergeant, managing logistics support for combat brigades as they exited Iraq.
While deployed, Chapman applied to lease on with Landstar, drawn by the opportunity to run his own business, choose his routes, and spend more time with his family.
Following his deployment, Chapman balanced life as a Landstar business capacity owner (BCO) with continued service in the Army Reserve before transitioning to full-time owner-operator.
“The Army taught me to be self-sufficient and adaptable,” Chapman said. “Those skills prepared me to be successful as a BCO.”
In 2025, Chapman achieved Million Mile Safe Driver status, marking more than one million consecutive accident-free miles with Landstar. Beyond the milestone, he credits Landstar with giving him the freedom to be present for life’s moments — including attending his son’s baseball games. “Being a BCO gives me the freedom to be where I want to be,” he said.
